My Review: This is a great activity book for kids who want to learn more about bugs, and can make bugs seem less scary to kids who may not like them. The book is about A4ish in size and is filled with thick pages which are very colourful and filled with many fun illustrations from ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.
The book begins with some information on how to stay safe while searching for bugs as well as things to take on your trip outdoors before focusing more on the bugs themselves. The book explains what bugs are and then shows various different bugs and bug species which kids can learn about. There are lots of creatures mentioned including spiders, worms, beetles, caterpillars, butterflies, moths, etc. There are lots of illustrations of the bugs and lots of fun activities to do. There isn’t a lot of text on each page so kids won’t feel overwhelmed in reading this book, instead there are lots of images with bits of text, often just a sentence or two, among the pictures.
Every page and double page is filled with lovely colourful pictures. There are lots of illustrations from ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ as well as various pictures of insects and their environment. I really love all the images as they are very fun but also realistic so it’s easy for kids to be able to identify a bug they see while outdoors as being one from this book. Apart from things to learn and read in this book there are lots of activities mentioned for kids to do too. There are two double pages of stickers in the back of the book with one double page of colourful stickers and one double page of black and white ones to colour in. The stickers for colouring in are made of a great paper. I’ve tried colouring in stickers with a pencil and not only is the paper a crisp white with clear black outlines but the paper is of high quality, my pencils glide on the paper and colour well and I’m sure some felt pens could be used too, although I haven’t tried them. The stickers in the book are for using inside the book with lots of places to stick them in and the book does mention which page certain stickers belong to.
Other activities for kids to try are games to play, recipes of snacks you can make to eat as well as things to make (including a bug home which is an interesting project and surprisingly easy to make!). As well as facts to learn and activities to do there are also some bug related jokes on some of the pages.
I love activity books, I have always loved them since I was a child and this book is a great one for kids as there really is a lot to do and lots to learn. I also think it’s a great book to help kids who might be feeling a bit nervous around bugs to gain more interest in them, and it’s a book I’d definitely recommend.
